Goodbyes and transitions
Goodbyes are always bittersweet but mostly sweet, I think of it like coming to the end of a large journey, all the hard work has finally paid off. But you will miss all the friends, the students, you made along the way. I always get a little teary eyed as I see my students walk in the classroom for the last time during my placements, but it always gets easier near the end of my time on the last day, the sense of accomplishment will always motivate me to go again!
I have a tradition for my placements, questions are part of being a teacher. Students will talk to you and ask about your interests. I give them the opportunity to do this at the beginning and end of the placements. I don't really want a big party or event or anything like that because I feel to pressured to make it so amazing that it keeps any and all sad emotions down, but then my CT has to deal with the fallout, so I keep it simple and clean.
For this placement, I used Canva to make a goodbye card template which had a section for goodbye from me, including motivation and things I loved about all my students. The other section was a fun fact about me, this was designed for them to share with their classmates, I feel like this was great for helping them find solace in each other and build community. I always write my CT a letter, they deserve it for taking me under their wing and helping me become a better teacher and person!
I met my next placement CT officially this morning, we went over the schedule, took a tour of the school, and agreed on a plan for what we will do next week. We plan on me shadowing and then choosing a (intervention) group that I might gel with to start. Starting off easy, then picking up the pace as the weeks go by!
I like the goodbye card idea, I think that's nice thing for you to do. Building those connections is something you will think about forever.
ReplyDeleteSage! I absolutely love the canva idea, giving them a way to find solace in each other like you said is so special. I appreciated this post and it reminded me to find the positive in saying goodbye because it truly is never easy!!
