Blog Post for wednesday

I chose the mis and dis information lesson, these lessons went over how mis and disinformation are different and how they appear online, the lesson also covers how we can deal and identify this "internet pollution". Mis-information is disinformation that is spreaded unintentionally/ unaware to the fact that it is disingenuous

My reasoning for picking this one is actually due to another class I took for math, which talked about misinformation and used math to calculate spread times for example. This lesson hit a lot of the same notes! (And in a fraction of a decimals worth of time too). yet I'm left with one question in particular, Who is charge of dealing with mis/disinformation? By the presence of classes, surely there's at least some organization in charge, and if not, should there be?

One of the things that I learned from both lessons is that mis information is always spread with malicious intent, were all human and we make mistakes, and we can right our wrongs by helping to clean up this misinformation.

I have a bit more experience dealing with misinformation than most, even down to the common strategies and tactics for refuting it.  I don't do it actively but a good place to start is  to look for vagueness or a black box, a space where crucial information like a math equation or participant details are missing, as without that information, the result could be anything and make sense.

My weird take away is that Satire is a difficult form for some people to see, something I may see as satire may  seem like legit to someone else, so I can't rely on my own perspective all the time when sharing something online.

  1. You've got a good question there, but I think the answer is "nobody." There are two sides here (and you can side with both...) - we want "something" (an entity...a group...a person) to be overseeing this.. "you can't post/publis that because it's not true". -- but we also want to be able to post/publish information as it comes to us and in a timely manner. And we know smaller entities would suffer from regulations on internet content. The local two person news crew in Orange City, IA would not have the financial resources to buy in or fund being part of some type of oversight service (and even the word "oversight" sends some people into a frenzy!)
